About Us

Robert Walter Selections is a family-owned company based out of Asheville, North Carolina, that imports and distributes wine.  We have hand-selected each of the wineries that we represent in our portfolio, featuring wines from Argentina, France, Germany, South Africa, Spain, and the U.S. Though most of the vintners are small, hard-working growers and farmers, we also work with a few select cooperatives. All of our partners continue to hand craft their wines in a way that respects the land and its traditions, while embracing the benefits of modern technology.

Owner Robert Fiore Kral established Robert Walter Selections in 2009. Though his professional journey into the wine industry started in 1998, his connection with the traditions of wine and cuisine within Europe goes back for decades. With parents from Germany and Austria, Robert has had frequent opportunities to travel to Europe to visit extended family and to experience the different sights, sounds and cuisine of Europe. For over 50 years, during these trips he developed his appreciation of food, wine and their traditions.

His career in the food industry began in 1984. He started off as a coffee roasting apprentice at Victor’s Coffee and Tea in Madison, Wisconsin, where he soon achieved the role of experienced coffee roaster. Later, he opened and operated a popular European-style coffeehouse, Café Europa, just off the capitol square in Madison, serving freshly-roasted coffee and specialty coffee drinks, as well as freshly baked tortes, breads, and desserts. Robert ran this business from 1986 to 1994. Because owning his own business allowed him too much spare time, he simultaneously rejoined forces with Victor’s Coffee (renamed Victor Allen’s Coffee and Tea) as a national sales rep, introducing high quality coffee to different areas of the United States.

In 1996, Robert and his family moved to Asheville, North Carolina, where his focus on coffee gradually shifted to wines. At Fresh Market he managed the wine department as an Assistant Store Manager. After leaving Fresh Market he would work for Empire Distributing for 7 years. Shortly after leaving Empire, Robert became the wine cellar manager of Bouchon restaurant in downtown Asheville. During his six years at this popular spot in downtown Asheville, he developed a wine list with over 80 wines, 40 of them by the glass that featured wine exclusively from France. During the last year of his management this 11-table restaurant sold over 12,000 bottles of wine.

In 2009, Robert started Robert Walter Selections, finally allowing his passions for wine, food, travel, and working nonstop to come together.

Maggie Powell joined the RWS family in 2013, following a long-held passion for wine and a desire to pursue new professional directions. After years working in the non-profit industry in marketing and publication design, she lends a hand with promotional efforts and works closely with the sales team to build relationships in the community. She loves stepping away from her computer to pour these lovely wines at events where others can experience and enjoy them.
